Time-varying Hurst exponent for US stock markets

چکیده
In this work, the dynamical behavior of the US stock markets is characterized on the basis of the temporal variations of the Hurst exponent estimated with detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) over moving windows for the historical Dow Jones (1928–2007) and the S&P-500 (1950–2007) daily indices. According to the results drawn: (i) the Hurst exponent displays an erratic dynamics with some episodes alternating low and high persistent behavior, (ii) the major breakthrough of the long-term trend of the scaling behavior occurred in 1972, at the end of the BrettonWoods system, when theHurst exponent shifted form a positive to a negative long-term trend. Other effects, such as the 1987 crisis and the emergence of anti-correlated behavior in the recent two years, are also discussed. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The presence of stock market efficiency is a distinctive characteristic of the effectively functioning market economy. Investigation of the market efficiency of seven emerging East-European stock exchanges is carried out as their major stock indices (BELEX15, BET, CROBEX, ISE100, PFTS, RTSI, SOFIX) are studied in respect of long-range dependence (LRD), persistency, and forecasting possibili...

Modeling and analysis of future prices has been hot topic for economic analysts in recent years. Traditionally, the complex movements in the prices are usually taken as random or stochastic process. However, they may be produced by a deterministic nonlinear process. Accuracy and efficiency of economic models in the short period forecasting is strategic and crucial for business world. Nonlinear ...
متن کاملStock price fluctuations and the mimetic behaviors of traders
We give a stochastic microscopic modelling of stock markets driven by continuous double auction. If we take into account the mimetic behavior of traders, when they place limit order, our virtual markets shows the power-law tail of the distribution of returns with the exponent outside the Levy stable region, the short memory of returns and the long memory of volatilities. The Hurst exponent of o...
متن کاملDetecting subtle effects of persistence in the stock market dynamics
The conventional formal tool to detect effects of the financial persistence is in terms of the Hurst exponent. A typical corresponding result is that its value comes out close to 0.5, as characteristic for geometric Brownian motion, with at most small departures from this value in either direction depending on the market and on the time scales involved. We study the high frequency price changes...
